How to blow up the BCS. Two BCS Doomsday scenarios.

The BCS is a fragile giant these days.  Everywhere you go you find people talking about how much they hate it.  It has all the money and power of King Solomon, and yet the common man hates it.  Occasionally you will run across the odd BCS supporter.  It's usually either a person who just likes to play devils advocate.  Or someone who is afraid of change.  Sure we have heard all the arguments about how the bowls are so special and how a playoff would make the regular season meaningless.  And we all know those arguments are bunk.  The real problem standing in the way of a playoff is money.  The BCS makes it, by the truckload.  It could easily be argued that a college playoff would make a lot more money.  But that's not a guarantee and the BCS is a guaranteed payday now.   So how could this mighty giant fall?  Well you would have to get enough people angry with the result of the season.  And we are not talking about some Boise fans.  You have to get a lot of folks angry, from the big conferences. And here are two ways that could happen this season.

First, you could have a Thanksgiving weekend apocalypse.  Auburn could lose to Alabama, and Oregon could loose to Arizona.  That would leave Boise State and TCU at the top of the polls.  Followed by a one loss LSU that will not be playing in its conference championship.  In all likelyhood even though LSU didn't win its conference.  And LSU wasn't ranked ahead of TCU of Boise up till now.  LSU would jump ahead of one of them and claim a spot in the BCS championship game.  The other spot going to Boise or TCU.  So this would leave an undefeated TCU or Boise out.  Not to mention a slew of one loss teams like Wisconsin and Nebraska that did win their conference (assuming Wisconsin and Nebraska win their conference).  A lot of folks would be unhappy.  The outrage at a one loss LSU who didn't win a conference going over one loss conference champs would be loud.  This might not bring down the BCS this year, but it would seal its fate in 2014 when the contract is up.  And you know what?  Les Miles might just be lucky enough to pull this off.

So how do we destroy the BCS this year? Well for that we need another scenario.  We need an unlikely David to slay the Goliath.  And that Davids name is Auburn and Cam Newton.  If Auburn were to beat Bama this weekend.  And go to the SEC championship game and beat South Carolina.  Auburn would be assured a spot in the BCS championship game.  And for the sake of the argument lets say Oregon survives and is the opponent there.  Auburn goes on to beat Oregon and become the national champion.  Toomer's corner has never seen as much toilet paper as it would then.  But then, after the season, the NCAA rules Cam Newton ineligible.  The NCAA vacates Auburns wins.  So you have a scenario with an undefeated Boise State, an undefeated TCU, a one loss LSU, a one loss Nebraska, a one loss Wisconsin, and an Oregon team that only lost to Auburn.  What do you do with the championship?  The answer from the BCS would undoubtedly be that there would be no champion for this year.  A response that will make no one happy and everyone angry.  I think that scenario might just be enough to destroy the BCS this year.  However, we as college football fans, would have to suffer a lot to get it.  And we are still not sold on Auburn beating Alabama.  And Cam Newton has yet to be ruled ineligible.

So for now we sit and watch.  If you hate the BCS you root for Alabama and Arizona.  You hope and you pray.  We are on the verge of apocalypse.  Lets all sit back and enjoy the fireworks.
