Florida Hires Will Muschamp as New Head Coach.

Will Muschamp is the new Head coach of the Florida Gators.  What a surprise.  He is one of the biggest names in college football, no doubt.  But, he is not who we all thought would be taking the reins in Gainesville.  A defensive coordinator with no head coaching experience is an interesting choice.

Will Muschamp is a defensive mind.  He is a well-known former assistant of both Nick Saban and Mack Brown.  This seems an odd fit for the spread offense Florida Gators.  It may be the best fit though.  Florida struggled this year to run their spread offense without Tim Tebow.  Quarterback John Brantly is more of a traditional pro style QB.  Muschamp’s style is very similar to Nick Saban.  Emphasis on defense and special teams while using the offense to control the clock.   Rumor has it former Alabama pffensive coordinator and current Texas running backs coach Major Applewhite is coming with Muschamp.  Applewhite will be the offensive coordinator for the Gators.

This is particularly disturbing for Texas as Muschamp was their head coach in waiting.  Of course Mack Brown had made no announcement he was nearing retirement.  Expecting Muschamp to wait around forever would be unreasonable.  Though after a bad season and no bowl game losing Muschamp is a bitter pill for Longhorn fans.

It will be interesting to see what coordinators Muschamp takes with him, and from where.  It may end up causing quite the shakeup in the SEC.  The Florida coaching job opening was filled in only 72 hours.  We wonder what will happen in the next 72?
