Cam Newton finally stepped up to the plate and did an interview last night. He spoke to ESPN's Chris Fowler. We are sure this was a tactic to get some of these questions out of the way so we don't hear them at the Heisman ceremony. The questions were very softball. The interview cut away from Cam's face and showed footage of him playing while he answered the toughest questions. Still through all that, Cam managed to make a fool of himself and call all of us idiots.
When asked if he had done anything wrong, he of course said, "I'm a person who did no wrong." Reggie Bush still uses that line when talking about his time at USC. When asked if his father did anything wrong he said, "It's not for me to say but I know if I pick up the phone Cecil will be there. My love for him is unconditional. This type of situation can split a family but it makes us stronger." Okay... that's not really an answer. So he won't confirm or deny his dad has done anything wrong. Cam followed this by saying he never asked his dad about what had happened. Wait hold on... we are supposed to believe that after this situation almost made him ineligible he didn't ask his dad what went down? Wow.
Next, when asked about reports that he told Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen that he couldn't come to Mississippi State and was going to Auburn because "the money was too much," Cam said, "I'm not here to talk about any reports." Double wow. Cam is pulling a Barry Bonds. If it was us, we would be shouting about how innocent we are. But Cam won't deny the allegations against him. All he would have to say is "that's not true." But he won't say that because it is true.
When asked if it was his or his fathers decision to go to Auburn Cam said it was his call and his decision not his father's. Which of course completely contradicts what he said to Sports Illustrated earlier this year about his dad making all the decisions concerning where he would play football.
Cam knows that on January 11th he will be done with Auburn. He will move on to the pros. Auburn might be celebrating a national championship, but Cam knows that in three months, a year, or two, it's all coming back. What this interview continues to show is arrogance. Cam really thinks that saying what he did will be enough and this will all go away? He thinks that anyone other than an Auburn fan is going to buy any of this? We sure aren't. And looking at the national media today, not many are. Sorry Cam we just can't swallow this fairy tale anymore.
