Thin Ice / Out the Door

Thin Ice is our college coach on the brink of being fired segment.  Out the Door is our segment for coaches that are getting ready to bail on their current program.  Since there is so much going on with coaches today; we decided to combine the two.

It's that time of year again.  Time for the coaching carousel of college football to get fired up.  In the last 24 hours we have had a lot happen.

Randy Shannon is out at Miami.  This was not a surprise. To say that the big wigs over at the U are disappointed in the direction of the program would be an understatement.  But it is a problem of their own creation.  When they fired Larry Coker did they go get the best coach out there?  No they hired his top assistant.  Look for Miami to try to hire someone fresh this time.  Jon Gruden was the first name thrown out there, of course he shot that down.  There have been rumors of Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen.  Dan Mullen sounds like a good fit since he has recruited in Florida before.  But would he trade a program he helped get on track for Miami?  Miami has some serious problems.  Watch one of their games on TV.  The stadium is empty.  You also have to compete with the Dolphins , Marlins, and all the other attractions of Miami for attention.  And is Mullen a big enough name for Miami at this point?  A good way to energize the school would be to shoot for a big name hire.  Whoever they do hire will have a lot of work to do.

Colorado has been without a coach for a few of weeks now.   There has been no word on who they are looking at for the coaching job.  There are of course rumors.  Houston Nutt has been a name thrown around for a few weeks.  Course Houston is always getting his name thrown around, wonder why?  There has also been talk of Gus Malzahn the offensive coordinator for Auburn.  This would be a good fit for Malzahn as the Buffs are headed to the PAC 12.   His style of offensive would do well in that league.  And you have to say that the timing is right.  His stock is never going to be hirer than it is right now.

Minnesota has been looking for a coach for over a month now.  We don't see this one being resolved anytime soon.  It's a hard sell.  A program in shambles.  Very little support from fans and boosters.  The Gophers play in a very competitive league.  Not to mention it's in Minnesota, we hear it's cold there.  Minnesota may need to look at a lower division coach that has succeeded under adversity.  If we were the AD at Minnesota we would be looking at Kerwin Bell.  Bell is the coach of the Jacksonville University Dolphins in Jacksonville Florida.  It's a team with no scholarships and no real fan support.  He has taken them to two straight winning seasons and almost had them in the playoffs this year, WITH NO SCHOLARSHIPS.  Now this is a man who can deal with adversity.

And now a word on ole Houston Nutt.  Nutt is out the door.  He has been having problems with AD Pete Boone.  Of course everyone has problems with Pete Boone.  Boone is probably the most inept and ignorant AD in the country.  However, Nutt is not the most stable fellow.  Nutt is constantly feeling out for other gigs.  Whether Nutt goes this year on his own or gets canned next year, hes gone.  And most Ole Miss fans we have talked to don't seem all that worried about it.  The common belief with the Ole Miss fan base is that Nutt succeeded with former coach Ed Ogeron's players.  However we would point out this up and down season after season roll is a Nutt standard. Look at his tenure at Arkansas.  Either way we get the feeling both sides are ready to part ways here.

And finally you may have noticed we didn't mention Mike Leach.  Well that's cause he's nuts.  We feel that Leach's success at Texas Tech was lightning in a bottle.  The next school to get Leach is going to get all the crazy and none of the wins.
