The first and most obvious out for "the" Ohio State is to find a scapegoat. Ohio State may go with the someone in the compliance department is to blame line. Surely they could find a way to say that Tressel informed the compliance department, but some scapegoat in the department didn't tell the NCAA. They will do an internal investigation to find out what went wrong in the compliance department, it will take months. Then they will publicly reprimand Tressel and say he should have followed up and made sure the NCAA was informed.
Surely Tressel knows who Yahoo sports source is, that might be the other play for Ohio State. Claim that this source has no idea what they are talking about, and Tressel is as clean as a fresh sweater-vest.
Either way we would be willing to be Tressel doesn't take the fall for this. "The" Ohio State will find a way to keep him away from the muck. After all, they aren't the little sisters of the poor.
I look good in a sweater-vest
