First, lets establish whether the tapes exist or not. Scott Moore of course has been talking about them for a week now. Some in the press have been unwilling too take Moore's word about the tapes based on the fact that he is a radio personality, as if only a newspaper man or ESPN reporter could possibly be in the know. They claim Moore is only talking about this to try to drum up interest in his radio show. That is a possibility, however we would find it hard to believe that someone would lie this many times and in this broad a manner knowing they would be called on it eventually. One of the factors in Moore's favor is that he has not been contradicted by John Bond or Bill Bell, the men who own the alleged tapes. If Moore was lying about the tapes you would think it would be in Bond and Bell's interest to correct the misconception. Also important is the fact that Moore is still in contact with John Bond. Friday morning when he spoke about the tapes for the second time Moore said he had been on the phone with Bond only a short time earlier that day. If Moore was fabricating his story about the tapes it wouldn't be good for his radio show. Any interest in his radio show would be short term, the listener's he did gain would quickly lose faith in him if he turned out to be a fraud.
Moore's credibility was further improved by the fact that Paul Finebaum backed him up on Friday afternoon. After playing Moore's recent interviews on the Cam Newton tapes, Finebaum commented that he has known Moore for years. He went on to say Moore is an upstanding guy and not someone who would simply make something like this up.
Moore isn't the only one that has heard the tapes. After his first interview on Thursday Moore asked the interviewer Matt Wyatt, a former MSU quarterback, if he had heard the tapes. Wyatt confirmed that he had. So now we have at least two people saying that the tapes do exist, Bond and Bell aren't denying their existence, and even the ever skeptical Paul Finebaum seems to believe that they are real.
This leads us to our second question, if the tapes are real why haven't they been released yet? We don't think this is a question with only one answer. Bond and Bell are loyal to Mississippi State, if there is anything on the tapes that may put Mississippi State in a bad light they would be reluctant to release them. We can hardly see a scenario where if the tapes say what we have been told they do, they would not at least be a concern from the view point of Mississippi State. At the very least, even if Mississippi State offered no money for Cam, they didn't withdraw his scholarship offer after they knew he was looking to get paid.
The tapes are now worth significant money. Any number of news organizations would be willing to pay a premium for those tapes. TMZ sports could put itself on the map by being the first to release these tapes. We are sure HBO would be interested in having them for their upcoming special on the state of college football. Bond and Bell may just be waiting on the right offer. This might also might explain why Moore seems to be acting with Bond and Bell's blessing. By talking about the tapes publicly and getting interest in them Moore is no doubt driving the price of the tapes up. There is a strong possibility that Moore and Bell are in this together to some extent.
There has also been talk of John Bond threatening the NCAA with the possible release of the tapes. Several sources have said Bond is sick of the way the NCAA seems to be letting Auburn slide on the Cam Newton issue. If this is the case Bond may be waiting to see what the NCAA does before deciding whether its necessary to release the tapes.
We feel comfortable at this point with the stance that the tapes do exist. We will have to wait and see if they contain everything we have been told they might.
