| These tapes are not what Auburn wants to hear. |
If this is true, it is shocking. We truly didn't think that Cecil would have been so careless as to be recorded or to have sent text messages. To have sent them to multiple people is really careless. It shows a lack of concern for not only his son, but for anyone else involved. The important thing to Cecil was that he got paid.
When these tapes come to light, Auburn will of course have several reactions. First, they will claim that Cecil is a known liar and is lying to Mississippi State in order to try to extort money from them. Next, they will say that there is no proof that Auburn gave any money to Cecil Newton. Lastly, they will say that this changes nothing because Cam didn't know what Cecil was doing. They will be right on all three points.
It's still a gamble for Auburn though. Cecil is not the kind of man to take being trashed in the media well, he has become the scapegoat on this whole ordeal. The Auburn line has been: it was Cecil's fault, his greediness, Auburn did nothing wrong. Do you think Cecil will react to these new allegations now that Cam is no longer at Auburn, or do you think he will come out and fight them. If Cecil is the kind of man he is turning out to be, Auburn better hang on tight. We would imagine that Cecil would want to fight this every step of the way. Cam is off to the NFL, what does it matter to him if Cecil blows the whistle on Auburn? Cam has already showed how concerned he is about it this week, here. Cecil Newton will be looking for that next payday, a few hundred grand from HBO Real Sports would make him a happy man. For the right price, we think Cecil would be willing to sell out Auburn rather than have his or Cam's name sullied any further.
The NCAA has not said whether they have heard these tapes or not. If they have heard them, and they still ruled the way they did it will make for a media firestorm. We are convinced that they will to stick to the company line, that Cam didn't know, so its all fine. However, we think that the pressure on the NCAA is going to increase dramatically.
