College Football Playoff Plan #18,576

As likely as a college football playoff.
College football needs a playoff.  We all know it.  Is it ever really going to happen?  Probably not.  The Big Ten is never ever going to give up the rose bowl and an automatic BCS bid.  Not only that but they are never going to want a playoff based on the fact that they stink and would most likely never have a team get past the first round.  However, it’s still fun to talk about a college football playoff and how it would work.  We would like to suggest the following for your consideration. Our plan is not complete yet, we still need to figure out a tie-breaker system.  Any suggestions are welcome.

College Football Playoff Plan 18,576

Mark Cuban wants to have mid-season playoffs; this would create an incredibly complicated and ever-changing season of college football.  We think we could accomplish the goal of a playoff while still making the regular season exciting.  In fact, we think we could make it a lot more exciting.  The plan would be simple: assign points to each game a team plays during the season.  Our plan would leave the automatic qualifying formula in place (the Big Ten needs to keep up the appearance that they are significant). The top 8 teams, in points earned, would get to play in the playoff.

The points would be distributed as follows:
Win against out-of-conference team in the top 25 =3
Conference win =
Win against out-of-conference team = 1
Win against team from the lower division = 0
Win against team with a losing record = 0
Loss to out-of-confrence team in the top 25 = 0
Conference Loss = 0
Out of Confrence Loss = 0
Loss against team from the lower division = -1
Loss against team with a losing record = -1

Obviously, this would mean that teams in a stronger conference—a conference with more teams in the top 25—would be rewarded.  An easier schedule would not be a ticket into the playoffs; the most fool proof way to get into the playoffs would be to win in a hard conference.

The playoffs themselves could take place outside the bowls.  They could occur in the month of January, allowing other teams to go to the BCS bowls and keeping the bowls intact and the conference ties intact.  The simple solution to the problem of too many bowls would be to get rid of some of the smaller ones.  It would create even more football and more money for the conferences.
An eight team playoff would mean 7 games.  7 games total.  It could be done in a two week span.  How would you fill up those stadiums?  Simple, hold the games in major population centers like New York City and Los Angeles.

If this all seems so blindingly simple, it’s because it is.  We know this plan isn't perfect,  but it does illustrate how easy it would be to create a college football playoff…if the big guys actually wanted it.  Maybe it’s time for them to be honest with us.  The Big guys, specifically the Big Ten, doesn't want a college football playoff because they would never win.  They don't want to be embarrassed.  It’s ok to be chicken, just own up to it.
